Our Story

In 2022 a Queensland-based online colloquium of practitioners and community members gathered to discuss a shared concern regarding a lack of a formal community development structure that can speak with authority about community development to other bodies including government, universities, corporations, NGOs, civil society etc.  The members of this meeting decided to work towards establishing a structure to strengthen and sustain the practice of community development. A steering committee was formed and given clear Terms of Reference for the period of late 2022-2024.  The steering committee is now guiding the Community Development Institute Initiative (CDII, the Initiative) that has a mandate to convene a decision-making forum in late 2024 to establish a Community Development Institute (or some version of this under a proposed name).

Milestones to date include:

A colloquium in October and November 2022

Steering committee formed in November 2022

Structural analysis workshop in April 2023

The Participation Diagram below depicts the interconnected cycles of engagement and decision-making structures and processes for the development of the proposed CD structure.
